One RFA Down, One To Go: Gorges Signed

Josh Gorges, arguably the team's most improved player last season, is no longer a RFA.

Gorges, 23, signed a three-year, $3.3 million extension with Montreal. The length of the deal caught him a little by surprise.

"From where I started with the Montreal Canadiens to where I am now, I've taken steps forward," Gorges said from his off-season home in Kelowna, B.C. "The team gave me an opportunity to play and has shown faith in me."

"I didn't know what to expect. I was shocked at three years. They said they wanted me and it fit well for me."

The Canadiens acquired Gorges and a 2007 first-round draft pick (Max Pacioretty) from the San Jose Sharks in return for defenceman Craig Rivet and a fifth-round pick on Feb. 25, 2007.

The only RFA remaining is Ryan O'Byrne. The Habs have an estimated 7,506,366 remaining of cap space... Mats Sundin, you're still welcome here!

even though we go below the cap, we can always sign sundin and pay him whatever cap space availability and fill in the rest with bonuses.
